A Right Royal Find

I know this is a restoration blog, but I am a bit of a Royalist and couldn’t help myself since we are celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee this week and all … and loving all things vintage or antique, I thought this might interest some of you.
While at my favourite Recycle Market recently, I came across these four newspaper souvenir collections from yesteryear and was a bit excited!
L to R: Sunday Herald Coronation Pictures Souvenir, June 7, 1953; The Times Pictorial Record of The Royal Tour, 1953-54; The Sunday Herald Coronation Souvenir, May 31, 1953; The Courier Mail Coronation Supplement, June 1 1953.
Sydney’s Sunday Herald
May 31, 1953
Featured beautiful souvenir pictures in preparation of the coronation itself, but of more interest to some people would be some of the great vintage advertising on these old pages.

Like this Crown Lightingware ad. Such beautiful 50s decor, don’t you think?

The Courier Mail Coronation Supplement (June 1, 1953)
was Queensland newspaper’s official guide to the Coronation and features a lot of the protocol that went on behind the preparations of the Coronation.
At first I wondered why we are celebrating 60 years this week, when clearly these newspapers I found are only 59 years old?? Well, the opening article in this paper answered our questions with its headline: “But Why have a Coronation When Elizabeth is Already Queen?” It goes on to explain that Her Majesty undertook the title of Queen after her father died, but the official Coronation was not held until almost 18 months later.

Like this old ad for Mobiloil? Every ad in all of these papers contains some reference to the Coronation of a new Queen, or at the least a congratulations to Her Majesty from the company.

Sydney’s Sunday Herald (June 7, 1953) contains actual pictures and record of the Coronation itself.

The Times Pictorial Record of The Royal Tour 1953-1954 is printed and published by The Times Publishing Company, Ltd of London, England. (Monday May 17, 1954)
This is a beautiful 32 page souvenir collection of pictures from Her Majesty’s first official Royal Tour as Queen.

Her customary Christmas speech was made that year from Government House in Auckland, New Zealand.

I’d love to scan some of these beautiful pics sometime. So many to share.
I hope you enjoy celebrating this week. Any excuse for a party I say! 🙂

Oh what a great find! Perhaps you could share some of these with Karen at The Graphics Fairy! I am sure she could do something with them. I am not British, but so enjoy old ads. I am a new follower of your blog and found you via the graphics fairy! Love both your blogs.
