Would you throw this old Jute Rug out?

At the end of this post I’ll be sharing about my next Hometalk Live project transforming a jute rug – don’t miss it.

Okay, I’m a little embarrassed to show you this picture. Yes, this mat was “welcoming” our visitors to our house as they entered the front door. I know – shame … but it looked beautiful when I first bought it.
But don’t you worry – I had a plan! And I think it worked well.

The Plan:

Enter Stencil, Brush, and Paint!

How to Stencil Like a Pro

You can read more about my stencilling tips and methods for getting nice neat edges HERE.

I used the Fusion Mineral Paint colour, Raw Silk for this stencil – I love this colour, and it’s fast becoming a favourite for many. It is an off white with a hint of creamy yellow & a hint of grey. Raw Silk is the colour 2nd from the right in the image below:Fusion Mineral Paint

You can do this with any stencil of your choice. Just make sure you tape your edges down and if using a patterned stencil, line up your pattern well as you move your stencil around your rug.

Looking better already!Once I finished the stencilled area and allowed the paint to dry, I taped off the inside jute area, ready to paint the fabric trim around the edge of the mat.I used Fusion Mineral Paint’s Midnight Blue to paint around the edges of the mat. I’ve painted fabric before using Fusion Mineral Paint and it works really well on most fabrics.

I used metallic Gold to paint a stencil on a T-Shirt HERE and I painted my daughter’s canvas shoes HERE.
Painting a Jute RugThe Midnight Blue covered really well over all. I did touch up a little the next day when the paint had dried and I could see any areas that may not have covered as well – mainly in the stitching areas where you have to smoosh the brush in a little harder.Fusion on Fabric

The Finished Look!

And now, I’m more than happy to let this one sit at our front door to greet people for a little while longer.Jute Rug makeover

What do you think?

Do you have an old rug that needs an update? Would you paint it or stencil it?

EDITED to ADD:

During Hometalk’s Facebook live broadcast, I made over our large area rug (below) which is also a jute rug with a tan trim. See the video below for the full Hometalk Live PLUS the finished transformation at the end of the video!Jute rug makeover
