The Storage Wardrobe
I bought this perfectly good wardrobe from ebay and it has been used for storing some of my “to do” pieces of smaller signs and rustic wood decor in my workshop for a long time now.
It appears to be mostly silky oak and for die-hard wood fans, you are already cringing at the fact that I painted this. But it was sitting there calling my name and BEGGING to be the next star attraction here on the blog, so here goes …
Farmhouse White
I mixed together some Farmhouse White which will be a new colour in the Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint range coming to our online store early in 2016. It’s made from a perfect blend of the three whites in MMSMP’s colour range.
I’m really LOVING this colour and you will see me paint with it a lot since I’ve discovered how lovely it is – with slightly better coverage than Ironstone white.
After painting a couple of coats of Farmhouse White, I thought it looked a bit plain and bare, so I decided to dress it in full vintage vibe with one of Donna, from Funky Junk‘s Stencils which we hope to be able to stock in our online store in 2016 also!
Stencilling – a Great Addition!
Donna has created a range of beautiful old world sign stencils, some of which we use in our Sign Making Workshop (Book here).
Taping down your stencil with painter’s tape is important to keep it from moving as you work.
Then dry brush (meaning dip then wipe off most of the paint on paper or cloth) onto your stencil in almost a perpendicular swirling motion or you can stipple – up & down. I chose a mix of Fusion Mineral Paint‘s Soap Stone & Casement for the gray colour.
For a great shadowing effect, see the pic below. When your stencil is dry, move the stencil slightly left and down (or choose another direction if you wish) and choose a contrasting colour, either darker or lighter to go over the stencil again. I chose to just create a shadow on the word “Coffee” (see next image) using Fusion MP Soap Stone.
See the slight adjustment makes a shadow effect:
And there you have it – a lovely stencil to finish of your piece of furniture or create a rustic sign with! I did the same shadowing effect on the Antiques sign below, using Fusion Mineral Paint colour Ash as the gray, and Fusion’s Fort York Red as the final colour on top of the gray, slightly shifted.
Ta-dah!!
Farmhouse White – MMSMP
I gave the wardrobe coffee stencil a light sanding over with my SandiHands sanding glove and it was as good as old – new but old! Then a wax over the entire piece with MMSMP Furniture Wax (my fav) and I was finished.
