Looking for the perfect piece for a special job!
First, let me say thank you for all the wonderful name suggestions for my lovely dresser drawers I posted about last week! I have picked a name that someone suggested in a comment on my Facebook post about the dresser. I’ll let you know at the end of this post …
I totally forgot to take before pictures of this little cabinet makeover. It was a Gumtree find and the owners grandfather had re-varnished it at some stage over a deep reddish stain. The varnish was quite glossy, so I knew I would probably have to sand back a bit to roughen up the surface to paint it. I chose the Fusion Mineral Paint colour, Casement, and to assist with the coverage of the white over such a dark piece, I used Fusion’s Concealer to help take it from dark to white!
But it was sitting in my “to do” pile – well, taking up a position in our living room is more correct. One day, Marty & I were talking about our wifi situation – we have a large surface area in our house and so the wifi doesn’t reach some places well from where it is situated at the moment.
We talked about moving the wifi access point downstairs and maybe in our centrally located built-in hall cupboard, but then it would need some ventilation around it, so a hall cupboard wouldn’t do. Marty asked me if I had a piece of furniture that might fit a certain rack that would hold the wifi router & technical gizmos (I’m sure that’s the tech term, right?).
Will this cupboard work?
I do love the size of this piece and the fact that it is on original old castors is a bonus. We measured up the rack, and yes, it will fit. So that was enough to spur me on to paint this right away. I sanded back the top to raw wood then used Miss Mustard Seed’s Antiquing Wax to darken the grain of the wood and give a lovely soft sheen to the surface.
Problem was, there were only four of them, and four were needed for the two drawers on top of this cupboard. So see those two cupboard door handles?
I had these door handles laying around from another cupboard that I had removed them from. So I painted them! Yes, I used Fusion’s Casement white – one of their whitest in the colour range. Which is the same colour I used for the cupboard. Then I sanded the edges to distress them similar to the drawer knobs.

Look what happens when you open the drawers! I think I’m in love with this look. This is one of the new Miss Mustard Seed hand painted stencils, called Susan.
I was inspired by a fellow Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint retailer in the USA who shared what she did with one of the new Miss Mustard Seed’s Hand Painted Stencils. Vicki Shoemaker from 3 Oaks Studio used the Elizabeth stencil on the side of her drawers.
Now we just have to do the re-routing of our wifi system and we’ll put our little cupboard in a perfect location for the wifi to reach all of the rooms as it should. We may have to open up the back of the cupboard for some ventilation which should be easy enough to do since we’ll need to drill holes for cabling also.

Here’s the dresser I posted about last week and so many of you commented on my blog and my Facebook post suggesting names for her. It wasn’t a competition, but I have picked one of the names, suggested by Marie Shaw over on my Facebook page. I love the name Audrey (of course it makes me think of the beautiful, Audrey Hepburn) and I think it suits my antique dresser. I’m so glad she’s not nameless any more.
